ROME (CIVITAVECCHIA)

Art greets you on every corner, from elaborate statues to delicate frescoes.

Stroll the ancient center and history comes to life as you explore the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum. Enjoy Italian café culture in Trastevere, where you can wander the narrow streets and soak up a sense of la dolce vita, or throw a coin into the baroque Trevi Fountain to guarantee your return to this vibrant, intoxicating city.

Civitavecchia cruise port is located about an hour’s drive from Rome. Shore excursions are an easy way to get to the city center if you prefer not to negotiate public transportation. Civitavecchia also has a combined bus and train station that is about a 15-minute walk from the port entrance. Shuttle buses are available from the pier to the entrance of the port. From there, you can start the walk or take a local bus to the train station. The Civitavecchia cruise port terminal also has information desks to help give you ideas for what to do and where to go in the surrounding area and nearby Rome.

OLYMPIA (KATAKOLON)

GREECE

No Greek Islands cruise is complete without going a little off-the-beaten path to the tiny fishing village of Katakolon in the region of Elis.

When you arrive at the Katakolon cruise port, you’ll be met by views of the bluer than blue Ionian Sea, romantic Greek vistas, and a beachy paradise.

You can venture on to Olympia, where the first ever Olympic Games were held to honor the Greek gods, or stop in at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia for a closer look at ancient Greek art and history.

In tiny Katakolon, where the population is just a few hundred people, time will stop, and you’ll be transported to another time. During your stopover in Katakolon, don’t miss the chance to try local Greek wine at the Domaine Mercouri Winery, or enjoy a fresh plate of olives and feta at a seaside taverna. The fresh sea air and the sight of fishermen out on the horizon will remind you of a simpler life. In Greece, you can have an incredible day doing absolutely nothing on a beach, or spend an unforgettable afternoon seeing the ancient sites of Greece.

The ship will dock at Pier 3 at the Port of Katakolon, which is walking distance to shops, restaurants, beaches, and things to do around town. It’s about a 10-minute walk to get to seaside views or delicious Greek food beyond the pier.

CORFU

GREECE

Warm Mediterranean sun and serene beaches are two main reasons why travelers come to Greece, and the island of Corfu happens to have an excess of both. Corfu cruises have risen in popularity in recent years, and luckily Corfu takes its popularity in stride. After all, Corfu’s elegant cobblestoned streets and stunning blue sea make it a quintessential stop on a Mediterranean cruise.

But beyond Corfu’s charm and beauty, you’ll find unmatched history and culture.

Corfu itself means ‘peaks,’ referring to the island’s famous two hills, each featuring their own massive fortress to ward off invasion. This Ionian island is strategically located at the mouth of the Adriatic Sea, making it a critical port for trade, commerce, and maritime warfare throughout the centuries. Its rich history boasts a litany of sieges and occupations, and with that came an unforgettable mix of Venetian-style art and architecture, French design during the 17th and 18th centuries, and a classically Greek spirit all rolled into one island.

While on cruises to Corfu, Greece, explore Old Town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Leave plenty of time for attractions like Achilleon Palace, the Old Fortress, and the Corfu Museum of Asian Art — to name just a few. Take in the intermingling scents of olive trees, lemon trees, and fresh sea air. Corfu welcomes you with every winding alley, terrace, and hillside.

SPLIT

CROATIA

Dubrovnik gets a lot of praise as the town that put Croatia on the map for tourism, but travelers shouldn’t forget about the charm and effortlessness of Split, Croatia’s second-largest city. In Split, you can trade in the Game of Thrones crowd of Dubrovnik for a buzzing city vibe featuring hundreds of years of history.

With a stop in Split from your Adriatic cruise, you’ll get access to excellent Dalmatian food, Romanesque influence, and a city teeming with energy and history.

DUBROVNIK

CROATIA

The ancient walled city of Dubrovnik basks on the coast of southern Croatia, surrounded on three sides by the sparkling Adriatic Sea. The entire Old Town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and when you visit as part of your Dubrovnik cruise, you’ll see why. You’ll feel like you’re stepping into an exquisite living museum of stone palaces, ornate churches, and ancient mansions.

You’ll have a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque splendor. Wander along the Stradun, a stately stone boulevard. Peek into grand palaces, and stroll chunky ramparts, taking in the jumble of terracotta rooftops below you. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors on a kayak trip around the towering walls. Ride the cable car up Srd Hill for stupendous views, or head across to sleepy Lokrum Island to swim off the rocks in the crystal clear sea. You’ll be charmed by this remarkable city.

BAR

MONTENEGRO

This sunny coastal town in southern Montenegro is not only the principal and largest seaport in the country but also the sunniest one—with 270 days of sunshine per year. Set against 27 miles of Adriatic coast, with nearly 6 miles of beach coastline, you’ll discover more than 20 breathtaking beaches on your cruise to Bar, where you can soak up the warm Mediterranean sun.

Exploring the area, you’ll find a diverse mix of cultures and activities like live discos, shows, old architecture—historic monasteries and churches—and sites like the Haj Nehaj Fortress, the Castle of King Nikola, and other 15th-century remnants. For a unique experience, seek out the Stara Maslina, one of the world’s oldest olive trees at over 2,000 years old. Get a taste of the area to take home by picking up some fresh local olive oil.

SICILY (MESSINA)

ITALY

Messina is the third-largest city on the island of Sicily, and it displays Sicilian culture and influence like no other city nearby. While on your Messina cruise, you’ll see that Sicily contains a magic and mystery unlike any other destination in Italy. Both cosmopolitan and rugged, island life here offers a fascinating combination of fishing communities, tiny towns, and beachy resorts.

CEL_Messina_Cityscape_6.jpg

Messina, Taormina, and the surrounding areas on the northeast corner of the island are particularly mesmerizing, whether you’re off sailing the picturesque Strait of Messina or climbing the summit of Monte Scuderi.

In Messina, there are quite a few experiences that other destinations can’t offer, like tasting an authentic Sicilian cannoli or enjoying Italian coffee bar culture. You could spend an entire day simply touring the historic churches and piazzas that give the city so much local color, like the mythology-rich Fountain of Neptune or the nearly thousand-year-old Cathedral of Messina. Go sailing or scuba diving in the Ionian Sea while you’re here, or simply sit at a trattoria and people watch over a delicious meal. Messina is meant to be truly enjoyed, not hurried through.
